Online painting software, some times called open source software, will provide you with a variety of Internet sites that allow you to draw and paint directly on a web browser on a Chromebook or desktop computer. Explore the following sites in the order they appear. Using the tutorials provided to complete the following projects. Create and save a collection of different images from the sites and combine them in a multilayered work by opening them all in a single Pixlr. Like Photoshop, Pixlr will allow you to create multiple layers in a single document. If you have Photoshop, use it. After becoming familiar with the sites, create a series of images that you can include in your portfolio. Follow the tutorials listed below and complete the following assignments. Visit often for updates and new assignments.

I can understand the expectations of the class, review projects, and access project tutorials and rubrics by visiting mrfatta.com, reviewing the syllabus, and getting familiar with the site.
I can create a shared slide show document by creating a Google Slides document in my district assigned Google Drive and sharing the Slides document with Mr. Fatta’s school email address.
I can begin to create artwork on my home computer by using Mr. Fatta’s links to free open source digital software available online.
I can create an image of a flame in various colors and effects by going to the Flame Painter application and exploring the different settings available in the tools and menu sliders.
I can create and save a JPG from the Flamepainter images by taking a screen capture by holding the CTRL and ALT keys and tapping the Print Scr key on PC to copy, command shift 3 on a Mac, and pasting the copy down to a new document in another software application like Pixlr and saving the image as a JPG on your computer.
I can create and save a spiral gradient with two colors blending together by using the Gradient Spiral feature and options in Sumopaint.com application and saving to my computer.
I can combine two Flamepainter images or other images together by pasting the images to different layers in a mulit-layerd software application like Photoshop, Sumopaint, and Pixlr, and blending the layers using the Blending Modes to integrate the images.
I can create a series of wallpaper patterns that I could apply to my designs, by selcting the Swatch and Pattern menus in the MudCu.be application, selecting a pattern from the Swatch panel, and using the Paint Bucket tool to pour the pattern into the entire area of the document.
I can save an image made on the Mudcu.be application by clicking the Save disc icon, right clicking the loaded image, and saving the file to your computer.

Students who are thinking of perusing a career in the visual arts will need to attend an art school or university that has an art program. There many colleges and art schools to choose from. Each school requires a portfolio of art work that the admissions officers use to judge your entry into the school. Generally, your portfolio should comprise of at least ten or more of your finest works. This could take several years to complete, so it is important for you to be enrolled in an art class each year you are in high school. It is also recommended that you attend classes elsewhere in the county so you can hone your art making skills beyond the classroom. Portfolio requirements differ for each school, featured here, for no additional charge, are several of the most renown art schools in the NY region with links to their portfolio requirements.

Artists’ Sketchbook https://mrfatta.com/sketchbook/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 09:28:27 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=9089 Artists keep sketchbooks to record observations, hone artistic skill and develop ideas. Artists and designers alike keep an ongoing journal to practice their drawing technique and develop ideas and products.

Besides an inspiring name for a mutant turtle in a secret underground ninja order, Leonardo was an extremely talented boy from the town of Vinci during the mid 1400’s. People who knew him recognized his creative talents, studying and drawing subjects from a wide range of topics and studies, from architecture to zoology. After becoming an apprentice to the Masters of his time, Leonardo would become the Master of Masters. Along side legendary works like the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, Leonardo’s sketchbook pages, numbering in the thousands, stands as a collective master piece of not only drawing, and illustration but of human investigation his spirit for curiosity.

Looking at exceptional master works can be a daunting for a student as well as is inspiring, it may drum up feelings that the skills are too hard to learn. All artists feel this way, start off small and practice the your skills for even just a few moments each day.  Illustrator Mark Crilley gave a drawing challenge his friends, “The rules are simple – each has to pick a character and sketch it three times by hand in 10 minutes, 1 minute, and 10 seconds.” In the featured article Greta, J. shares an array artists and images that reveal the artistic process and gradual progression of shape and form in a subject.

Terms and Concepts

Composition, an arrangement of line, shape, form, space, value, pattern and color or value.
Crosshatching lines, a series of crossing lines to create values, esp. pen & ink
Depth, the illusion of real space on a flat surface.
Line, varied weight, a line that changes thickness.
Shape, two dimensional enclosed areas, circle, square, etc.
Sketchbook, a book to practice drawing, formulate ideas and keep visual resources
Space & Structure, organization or composition of shapes, lines and forms in a picture.
Thumbnails, many small drawings that are studies for larger works of art.
Value, an element of design that relates to the lightness and darkness of a color or tone.

Materials

Students will need a sketchbook that they can use to sketch and draw in daily. A spiral sketchbook with white unlined pages works best, glued binders tend to fall apart after a while. A variety of sketchbooks are available at art supply stores and online or you can construct on in class. Below are a typical brands of sketchbooks you will find online or at a store near you.

Sketchbook Guide and Rubrics

• Cover each page with a variety of thumbnails, sketches, drawings and notes.
• Use thumbnail frames at first and mix frameless sketches into the page.
• Leave a little space, called gutters, between frames and the edges of the page.
• Sketch lightly at first, and darken lines later with a variety of dark and light lines.
• Create a variety of five to seven different values of gray, and work in some contrast.
• Add pattern, textures, and details, and other observations of the subject.

mrfatta dotcom | Stuart Davis https://mrfatta.com/stuart-davis/ Mon, 09 Oct 2023 17:31:00 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=3374

Stuart Davis was born in Philadelphia in 1892. At the age of 16 his family moved to New Jersey and Stuart studied art in NYC. He became inspired by the excitement of the city; the tall skyscrapers, bright colors, and electric signs, began to motivate him to paint pictures using bright colors. When he was older Stuart Davis visited Paris, France. There he became inspired by an art movement called Cubism, a style of painting that shows objects as basic geometric shapes like cubes and circles.

I can get familiar with Stuart Davis and his artwork by viewing images of his work and reading his biography.

I can create a digital artwork in the style of Stuart Davis by using the pen tool to create 10-15 geometric shapes in the style of Davis using the Gravit application.

I can create geometric shapes by using the shape tool in the Gravit application.

I can create a variety of geometric shapes by varying the shape selections in the shape tool selector.

I can fill the shapes with color by using the Fills panel and selecting a color from the swatch panel.

I can change the color, adjust the width, or eliminate the border stroke around a shape by adjusting the border in the border’s panel

I can blend the colors of my shapes by adjusting the blending mode in the Fills panel

I can assess and refine, and evaluate my work based on the established criteria listed in the project rubric.

I can feature my digital art graphics on slides in my digital portfolio by Inserting the JPG image onto a slide on my Google Portfolio.

I can submit my assignments in Google Classroom by clicking + Add or create, attaching your Google Slides portfolio document, and clicking Mark as done.

Eric Carle Animals https://mrfatta.com/carle/ Tue, 16 May 2023 21:01:00 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=4466

Eric Carle was an artist and children’s book writer who is most famous for his book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? He created his work by collaging colored paper that he created from painting large pieces of paper with different patterns and textures. He would use the painted pages to construct the animals by collaging the pieces of paper for the different parts of the animal together. In this lesson you will create a series of animal drawings and explore painting and collage methods similar to how Eric Carle created his art.

I can sketch the shapes of an animal by lightly scratching the paper with my pencil.

Puedo dibujar las formas de un animal raspando ligeramente el papel con mi lápiz.

I can draw an animal by drawing basic shapes to show the different parts of the animal.

Puedo dibujar un animal dibujando formas básicas para mostrar las diferentes partes del animal.

I can improve my sketch by outlining and darkening the lines that best show the animal.

Puedo mejorar mi boceto delineando y oscureciendo las líneas que mejor muestran al animal.

I can detail my drawing by adding the small parts of the animal to my drawing.

Puedo detallar mi dibujo agregando las partes pequeñas del animal a mi dibujo.

I can pattern my drawing by adding repeating lines, shapes or designs to my drawing.

I can color my drawing by carefully and slowly filling the shapes with even strokes of color.
Puedo colorear mi dibujo rellenando cuidadosa y lentamente las formas con trazos uniformes de color.

I can keep a clean paint set and desk area by rinsing my brush out before changing colors, not mixing colors in the set and painting to the edge of the paper.
Puedo mantener limpio el juego de pintura y el área del escritorio enjuagando mi pincel antes de cambiar de color, sin mezclar colores en el juego y pintando hasta el borde del papel.

William Henry Johnson https://mrfatta.com/johnson/ Thu, 01 Sep 2022 10:06:22 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=9459

William Henry Johnson was an African American expressionist painter.  He was born on March 18, 1901 in Florence, South Carolina to mother Alice Smoot Johnson (known as “Mom Alice” or “Aunt Alice”) and father Henry Johnson.  William H. Johnson was the oldest of five children: Lacy, Lucy, James, and Lillian.  Johnson spent his childhood helping out his family, finding a joy for painting, and attending rural grade schools in Florence.¹

I can create the illusion of depth in an interior space by drawing 3 converging lines that show where the walls and floor meet.

I can draw an interior space and make it look 3 Dimensional by using Vanishing Points and converging Lines and the rules of 1 point linear perspective.

I can create the feeling of light and shadow in an interior space by applying three shades of value to the different surfaces to show highlight, mid-tone, and shadow.

I can show objects in the space of the room by overlapping the horizontal and orthogonal lines and drawing objects on the floor and

I can draw tables and chairs by drawing horizontal ovals and trapezoids to represent the surface tops and extending vertical legs down from to the floor.

I can represent objects on the table’s surface by drawing the objects overlapping the top horizontal line of the table shape.

I can create the texture and look of wood by creating a series of striped patterns.

I can create the visual interest in an interior scene by adding details such as windows, curtains, and wallpaper patterns on the walls.

I can represent people in the scene by drawing the shapes of the figure’s clothing and placing the figures in the chairs and behind the tables.

I can assess, refine, and evaluate my drawings by comparing them to the components listed in the project rubric and adding attributes that are missing or need more refining.

Questions to Consider

What are some of the distinguishing features of Johnson’s paintings?

What symbols, images, or themes does Johnson use a repeatedly?

What are the different parts of his compositions and scenes?

What themes or ideas do you think are important to Johnson?

Can you list the various components of his composition?

How would you prioritize the different images you gathered?

How would you organize elements within a composition to create a story or theme?

What way would you design a story or a theme using the images you gathered?

How do the skills developed in the previous projects help develop the new illustration?

How would you organize the various elements so that all the items make a balanced whole?

How would you apply the knowledge you gained about the subject to develop a website?

In this project you are to create a series of portrait drawings of a person sitting in a chair drawing a person from your family in a kitchen chair or similar chairs as found in William H. Johnson’s work. Bellow are a series of portrait drawing by students, a series of common kitchen chairs, and s series of fashion flats that depict various articles of clothing. In this project you will study the proportion of the face, the perspective of a common wooden chair, and the structure of a shirt and body. You will be shown how to represent a chair in three dimensions using the principles of perspective outlined in this lesson.

I can assess, refine, and evaluate my drawings by comparing them to the components listed in the project rubric and adding attributes that are missing or need more refining.

Romare Bearden https://mrfatta.com/bearden/ Sun, 11 Apr 2021 18:49:55 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=2843

Romare Bearden was born in Charlotte, NC in 1912 and moved to Harlem, NY when he was 3 years old. His family moved up to the North East from South Carolina in what is known as, The American Migration Experience of African Americans or The Great Migration. He studied art at the Art Students League in NYC and his art career started as a political cartoonist for the Baltimore Afro-American. Mr. Bearden painted abstract pictures for a time but found more success when he began to combine his paintings with different collage techniques using a variety of materials. He gained recognition after a major art exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1967 organized a major exhibit of 55 African American Artists.

Collage

I can construct a digital collage and express a central theme in a work of art by combining various symbols and motifs that share a relationship in the scene’s context.

I can extract an image from a neutral (Plain, standard) background by using the Magic Wand Selection Tool in Adobe Photoshop and deleting.

I can extract objects from complex backgrounds by using the Magnetic Lasso Selection Tool to surround and select the object.

I can refine my selections to improve the accuracy of the object’s edges by using the Eraser and the Brush Tool in the Quick Mask Mode to refine the Mask meet the objects edge.

I can combine a variety of images within a digital collage by using various Selection Tools in Adobe Photoshop (AP) to extract objects from the background areas of the scene.

I can create a variety of effects using the Filter Gallery in AP and adjusting the settings within the filter and customize the effect.

I can create blend layers together and create dynamic effects by exploring the Blending Modes in the Layers Panel as well as adjusting the Transparency/Opacity settings in the Layer Panel.

I can Modify and refine my selections by using the Select Modify features in AP to Feather, Constrict, or Expand the selections.

I can assess, refine, and evaluate my work by comparing it to the items listed in the rubric and adding attributes that are missing or need more refining.

Collage generally refers to a 2 dimensional assemblage or combination of different items together to create a new overall composition. The term collage originally comes from the French word coller, which means to glue. In computer graphics or computer generated imagery, images are combined together without the traditional cut and paste as in the featured. In this project students are to combine a variety of images around a central theme and practice the various collage techniques for selecting items to form a new image. When gathering pictures for a theme it is important to think of many ideas that can be related to your main theme. .

What are the distinguishing features of Bearden’s collages?

What motifs, symbols, or icons do you see his work? What experiences might Bearden’s artwork recall in your mind?

What are the different part or elements of his work, how is it made? Based on the evidence, what do you think he is expressing?

Can you describe the different parts of a picture and how they are organized?

How would you prioritize the images you gathered for your collage?

What objects has the artist gathered to develop the motif of the work? How many different icons can you discern?

What collage materials can you identify, what texture do you see that shows you what the orginal material was?

How will you organize elements to create a story or theme?

Photoshop Collage

Use the following tutorials as guides to help you  combine 25 or more separate, but related, images together in a single composition. The finished composition should express a central theme using a variety of different images. Work to expand the ideas of the theme to include objects and items that usually aren’t associated with it. A central part of the grade also depends on the student’s ability to make precision cuts and selections around an object by skillfully using both studio and digital tools to cut and paste images. Cut and store paper images in the envelops provided, save and title digital images in your network folder (Do Not to delete the extension). Find images that will work to build a background setting to the images selected. Open each image in Photoshop and use the appropriate selection tool to cut the image from the original scene. Title and save the selected item as a png. Create a new document 11 inches by 8.5 inches titled Collage. Copy and paste the background image and all selected images onto the page, transform, resize, and place as needed. Experiment with the various effects, distortion tools, brush hardnesses, and transparency settings.

ForegroundObjects in the front in a scene

Gather images from magazines and newspapers to construct a collage of a portrait, a series of figures in a setting, a landscape scene, or a still life scenario using a variety of images that you will use to compose a collage. Choose to create a portrait, a scene of figures, or a scene/place. Each option should include a background setting, middle ground medium sized areas, and small details. Use the rubrics below to assess and evaluate your work against the project’s criteria. 1. Print your name and period number on the envelop provided, tape or secure the envelop into your sketchbook as a pocket to save the images into. 2. Gather 5 images related to your theme from the materials provided. Create a thumbnail sketch for each one in your sketchbook. Darken the lines and shade the thumbnails, add details and frames. 3. Gather additional images that will let you construct your subject using various parts from different images using the techniques we see in Romare Bearden’s work. Include images for background areas that will be the setting for your subject. 4. Born in 1917 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Lawrence moved with his family to Harlem in 1930, where he came into contact with some of the greatest artistic and intellectual minds of his generation. In the previous decade, Harlem had experienced the remarkably creative period known as the Harlem Renaissance, and the neighborhood was still the focal point of African-American culture. Before he was twenty years old, Lawrence had developed a powerful, concise style that expressed all of the vibrancy and pathos of the neighborhood and its occupants.¹
