The most notable art cars came from a series of cars painted by famous artists for BMW. Like Alexander Calder’s BMW paint job featured here, each car represents the style and expression of the artist. The car wrap has recently been used to decorate whole cars for advertisements and race cars, in this process designers print large custom decals of their design that are applied to the vehicle. To assist the process a  schematic templates of different cars are made to build their designs upon. The exercises below show how to utilize the templates within Adobe Illustrator.

Project | Automotive Design

Automotive design is a fast moving field. Using the vehicle templates provided below, develop techniques that will allow you to paint an automobile in your own style. Analyze the art cars of each of the artists depicted here, as you do consider the following questions; What type of cars do you want to design; what era or style of car will you begin with? What colors, shapes, lines, patterns, or other elements of art will be featured in your designs? How can we use the techniques of making highlights and shadows be applied to make the car look 3 dimensional; How can the templates help to illustrate the form of the vehicle? How can we build on what other artists have shared to create our own expressive vehicle? How can the templates aid our design and what illustrating tools can we apply to the problem? How can we construct 3 dimensional models with printed and electronic media?

Draw the 3 cars featured in the tutorials that follow, or draw 3 cars from the additional templates provided. Develop the ability to render the form of the vehicle utilizing features of the different templates. As you work experiment with creating new shapes and adding pattern and lines.

Writing Content from Source Material

I can paraphrase information about a career by gathering raw facts about it and arranging them in my own words.

In graphic design content, or copy, means the text elements in a design. When writing content it is important to write the information using your own words and to not copy from the web site or source material. Find facts from a variety of sources. It is also important to cite (list) the sources of the information you use to write your content using a format called APA Format, listing the author’s last name, first initial, date published, article or website title, and the web address. For example when citing something from this page one would write; Fatta, L., 2/18/2015, Career Research Infographic, www.mrfatta.com/infographics. Use the following tutorial below to guide you in writing information about your chosen career from the links below.

Mr. Fatta’s Graphic Design Career Essay

.

Infographic_logo_color

After reviewing the graphic design samples provided, develop a poster that conveys information about your career using elements of text color, shape, and images. Use the information about color psychology from the link on the right, determine which color harmonies fit your career. Recall your prior knowledge of principles of graphic design and analyze the various sample infographics,  recognize similarities, common elements and notice examples of contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.

Contrast
Contrast helps attract attention to a design. Contrast can be created by making elements of color, shape, text, value, or size of objects on your page very different. If elements such as type or color are not the same then make them much different. Objects that are too similar but different do not create contrast.

Repetition
Repeating elements in a design such as color, fonts, textures, or shapes throughout a design help create repetition, or pattern within a design. These principles help create unity and establish a theme in the design.

Alignment
All elements such as text boxes and images in the page should line up to something else on the page, elements should not be placed randomly in the design but help create a pattern. Using columns, guidelines, and live guides helps the designer align elements on the page.

Proximity
Proximity is the nearness to other objects in the design, pictures and text that relate to each other should be placed close together. When several components of a design are near each other they visually become one, rather than separate units. Pictures, text, and information on a cereal box about a free toy are often placed in close proximity, so too are design elements about the cereal’s nutritional value.

Henri Matisse https://mrfatta.com/matisse/ Thu, 07 Sep 2023 12:09:00 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=2583

Henri Matisse was a French painter and sculptor who lived from 1869 – 1954. He is most known for his brightly colored paintings from the early 1900 pioneering what’s known as the fauvist style. Fauvism emphasized strong color and unique brush strokes instead of realistic or representational forms. He is also well known for his brightly colored cut paper patterns that depict organic shapes and he gained recognition as a leading painter of the modern art movement.

I can get familiar with Henri Matisse and his artwork by viewing images of his work and reading his biography.

I can create a digital artwork in the style of Henri Matisse by using the pen tool to create 10-15 organic curved shapes in the style of Matisse using the Gravit application.

I can create organic curved shapes by using the pen tool in the Gravit application.

I can adjust the curves of my shapes by using the Subselect tool to move the anchor points and Bezier handles of my curves.

I can fill the shapes with color by using the Fills panel and selecting a color from the swatch panel.

I can change the color, adjust the width, or eliminate the border stroke around a shape by adjusting the border in the border’s panel

I can blend the colors of my shapes by adjusting the blending mode in the Fills panel

I can assess and refine, and evaluate my work based on the established criteria listed in the project rubric.

I can feature my digital art graphics on slides in my digital portfolio by Inserting the JPG image onto a slide on my Google Portfolio.

I can submit my assignments in Google Classroom by clicking + Add or create, attaching your Google Slides portfolio document, and clicking Mark as done.

Chess Piece https://mrfatta.com/chess-piece/ Fri, 05 Feb 2021 00:43:36 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=820 The game of chess has been around for over 1500 years. The game originated in India where it spread to Persia, and later through Southern Europe. The European chess game evolved to what we know today. The image pictured below shows the Knights Templar playing chess in 1283, and the other image shows a painting of Queen Nefertiti platting a chess like game somewhere around 1320-1200 BCE. The game of chess consists of 16 pieces; a queen, a king, 8 pawns, 2 bishops, 2 rooks, and two knights on a checkered board.

Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923 in New York City where he lived most of his life of 74 years.  Although he loved to draw, his High School didn’t offer art classes  so he would draw during his free time.  After high school he studied art at Ohio State University earning his bachelor’s degree and then received a MFA from the the same school. Later he would teach classes Ohio State and also taught art classes at SUNY Oswego, and then Rutgers University.

During the early 1960’s Lichtenstein created his first Pop Art paintings. Like many of his contemporaries he was inspired by commercial art of the 1960’s. His paintings emulated the strong black outlines evident in comic book art often using thick, horizontal stripes and patterned dots, called Benday Dots. Benday Dots were originally used in the early days of color printing, usually in cheap news papers and magazines. In the printing process at the time, the spacing of four different colors of dots either close together, far apart, or on top of each other, enabled the printers to mix all the colors. Lichtenstein was inspired by the effect and and incorporated the technique in his work. Looking closely at his works, one can often see the pattern of dots.  Lichtenstein’s drew inspiration from, newspapers, comic books, cartoons, and advertisements, and so his work became known as Pop Art because it portrayed images from popular culture.

Pixel People https://mrfatta.com/pixels/ Sat, 03 Aug 2019 17:11:58 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=2611 The early video games are sometimes refereed to as the 8 bit video game era, these include games such as Donkey Kong and Pac Man. In these games a pixal-ated character, known as a sprite, moves over a static, or sometime scrolling background.
The Atari 2600 was released in 1977 becoming the first successful home video game console. It lent its success to the popular video game Pong and the home version of the hit arcade games, Space Invaders and Pac Man. Since then several consoles and generations of video games have come and gone, each one increasing the bit size of the processor; 8 bit, 16 bit, 32, 64, and so on. Generally speaking, the bigger the bit rate and the more pixels the more detailed the image can be.

Atari E.T. Video Game Unearthed

During the early 1980’s the home video game console Atari ruled the gaming market. But with the proliferation of competing gaming systems and a lack of interesting games the home gaming boom came to an end with what is known as The Video Game Crash of 1983. Although several other boring games contributed to the crash, the crash is often attributed to the failure of the Atari video game E.T. Credited as the worst video game ever Atari was left with over 750,000 unsold game cartridges which where buried in a land fill in Utah. The game cartridges  were recently unearthed by a team making a documentary about the game and it’s demise.

Chess Board Perspective https://mrfatta.com/chess-board/ Thu, 23 May 2019 20:17:57 +0000 http://mrfatta.com/?p=950 Perspective is a technique used by artists and designers to show three dimensional objects on a flat surface. It was began to develop prior to the Renaissance by artists and architects to depict buildings in a more realistic way. It is based on the understanding that as objects go back into space they appear to get smaller. To decide how much smaller the objects need to be, perspective uses lines that come together to a vanishing point, called converging lines. One point perspective is used to show the interior of a room, In the painting titled, The Last Supper, by Leonardo da Vinci, Leonardo uses 1 point perspective to show the interior of a room, all the lines going back into space come together at a single vanishing point. Here, Leonardo draws the windows in the background smaller than the windows in the foreground. Study the windows on the sides of the scene, notice how the tops of each window line up with each other and are angled downward towards a single vanishing point. Study the pattern on the ceiling and notice that lines that appear to back into space converge at the vanishing point.

Two Point perspective is similar to 1 point perspective except that there are two vanishing points. Two point perspective is used to show two sides of a building or structure when viewed from outside. In the picture below, artist Giotto uses 2 point perspective to show the steps that the two men are seated on. Notice how the lines on right side of the steps go to a vanishing point to the right, while the lines of the steps on the left go to the 2nd vanishing point.

Vocabulary
Depth the illusion of real space on a flat surface
Foreshortening to portray or show (an object or view) as closer than it is or as having less depth or distance, as an effect of perspective or the angle of vision.
Perspective a system of drawing that gives the illusion of depth on a flat surface using parallel lines that converge at one or more vanishing points.
Vanishing point in perspective, an imaginary point or points on the horizon where parallel lines recede and converge.
Converge in perspective, lines coming together at the vanishing point.
Horizon a horizontal line dividing the sky & ground, or the wall & floor (interior).
Overlapping placing one object over another to give the illusion of space.
Scale the relationship of size when the same object is close, and far away.
Texture an element of design that refers to the surface, ex rough, smooth, fuzzy.
